I also count 26 cards that deal with keywords, either granting keywords to your creatures (Avenging Huntbonder) or are keyword soup creatures that other cards will use as fuel (Akroma, Angel of Wrath). The best cards to do this are graveyard tutors like Buried Alive, Corpse Connoisseur, and Jarad's Orders, which let us search our library for the creatures and put them directly into our graveyard. Cataclysmic Gearhulk, Kalemne's Captain, and Sunblast Angel are all thematic options, but they're also a bit clunky to use. I like the idea of leaning hard on creatures that can wipe the board since our deck has so much creature synergy. Just casting Buried Alive alone could put in the graveyard Zetalpa, Primal Dawn, Bassara Tower Archer, and Leyline Prowler, netting you 9 out of the 11 keywords and already makes Kathril a lethal threat! I have less left for the manabase than I usually do, so instead of going wide, I’m going to do some pinpoint replacements of lands I don’t like very much and bring in lands that might be more expensive than my average selection. It’s not even a year old! Kalemne’s Captain is better in a +1/+1 counter themed deck, so it gets cut here. | Budget Commander | $50, $100, $200, Budget Commander: Edric, Spymaster of Trest | Aggro Tempo | $30, $300 | Update, Budget Commander: Siona, Captain of the Pyleas | Aura Token Combo | $30, $60, $90, Budget Commander: Toshiro Umezawa | Spellslinger Control | $25, $50, $100, $200, Budget Commander: Moonfolk Tribal | Control Combo | $50, $100, $200, Budget Commander: Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle | Artifact Graveyard Control/Combo | $25, $50, $100, Budget Commander: Sram, Senior Edificer | Aura Voltron | $25, $50, $100, Budget Commander: Zada, Hedron Grinder | $25, $50, $100, Budget Commander: Gargos, Vicious Watcher | $25, $50, $100, Budget Commander: K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth | $50, $100, $200, Budget Commander: Morophon Everything Tribal | $50, $100, $200, Budget Commander: $20 Merciless Rage Upgrade, Budget Commander: $20 Mystic Intellect Upgrade, Budget Commander: $20 Primal Genesis Upgrade, Budget Commander: $20 Faceless Menace Upgrade, Budget Commander: Kykar, Wind's Fury | $30, $60, $90, Budget Commander: Morophon Devoid Eldrazi | $50, $100, $200, $470, Budget Commander: Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis | $25, $50, $100*, Budget Commander: Ayula, Queen Among Bears | $30, $60, $90, $190, Budget Commander: King Macar, the Gold-Cursed | $25, $50, $100, Blinged, Budget(ish) Commander: Nicol Bolas, Artifact Supervillains, Budget Commander: Nicol Bolas, Warped Devotion | $40, $100, $200, Budget Commander: Neheb, Dreadhorde Champion, The Big Budget Commander Update: Part 2 (Gahiji, Melek, Brago), The Big Budget Commander Update: Part 1 (Kaalia, Talrand, Darien), Budget Commander: 6 CMC Tribal | $50, $100, Budgetless, Budget Commander: $20 Subjective Reality Upgrade, Budget Commander: $20 Adaptive Enchantment Upgrade, Budget Commander: Arcades, the Strategist ($54 & $112), Budget Commander: Najeela, the Blade-Blossom ($58 & $211), Budget Commander: Tiana, Ship's Caretaker ($50), Budget Commander: Jodah, Archmage Eternal ($44), Budget Commander: Firesong and Sunspeaker ($100), Budget Commander: Licia, Sanguine Tribune ($50 & $100), Budget Commander: $20 Vampiric Bloodlust Upgrade, Budget Commander: $20 Arcane Wizardry Upgrade, Budget Commander: $20 Draconic Domination Upgrade, Budget Commander: $20 Feline Ferocity Upgrade, Budget Commander: Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest ($24), Budget Commander: Olivia, Mobilized for War ($30), Budget Commander: Selenia, Dark Angel ($38), Budget Commander: Baral, Chief of Compliance ($32), Budget Commander: $20 "Open Hostility" Upgrade, Budget Commander: $20 "Invent Superiority" Upgrade, Budget Commander: $20 "Entropic Uprising" Upgrade, Budget Commander: $20 "Breed Lethality" Upgrade, Budget Commander: $20 "Stalwart Unity" Upgrade, Budget Commander: Xenagos, God of Revels ($50), Budget Commander: Alesha, Who Smiles at Death ($56), Budget Commander: The Gitrog Monster ($50), Budget(ish) Commander: Archangel Avacyn ($80), Budget Commander: $20 "Wade Into Battle" Upgrade, Budget Commander: $20 "Call the Spirits" Upgrade, Budget Commander: $20 "Plunder the Graves" Upgrade, Budget Commander: $20 "Swell the Host" Upgrade, Budget Commander: Phenax, God of Deception ($50 or 7 tix), Budget Commander: Omnath, Locus of Rage ($63 or 14tix), Budget Commander: Purphoros, God of the Forge ($53), Budget Commander: Selvala, Explorer Returned ($57), Budget Commander: Rakdos, Lord of Riots ($40), Budget Commander: Zedruu the Greathearted, Budget Commander: Edric, Spymaster of Trest, Budget(ish) Commander: Darien, King of Jank, You want a deck that combines both Keyword Soup and Graveyard themes, You want a grindy deck that focuses on building up beefed up armies, You want a precon that can focus on either Graveyard, Keyword, or Combos, You don't care about creature-focused strategies, You want a Keyword deck, or a Graveyard deck, but not both, You think the graveyard is icky and would rather it all go away with a, Symbiotic Swarm (Abzan Graveyard Keywords) Commander 2020 Precon Upgrade | $20, $200 | Budget Commander. Cartographer’s Hawk may provide flying, but I needed a slot for a stronger accelerator. This is why the single best creature in the entire deck is actually Zetalpa, Primal Dawn, which is probably the first and last time anyone gets to say that about Zetalpa. As a reminder, I’m adding ten creatures after cutting seven, so don’t be alarmed. 1. Like I said with Gravebreaker Lamia, I’m more interested in adding some tutors when I’m on a budget restriction, and Buried Alive does such a good job of powering up Kathril that I couldn’t resist. As such, we're letting you know that we've updated our Privacy Policy to reflect the new rule set forth by the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Let's check out the preconstructed list: Out of the box, Symbiotic Swarm is a solid creature-focused deck that does a good job supporting both Graveyard and Keyword strategies. The $200 upgrade follows the same philosophy as the $20 upgrade: focus on getting all the keywords into our graveyard as quickly as possible. There's a lot of great cards here, but at least two that I'd cut. Despark is one of my all-time favorite budget removal options, Abzan Charm can draw cards if we don't need to remove a creature, and Acidic Slime comes with the deathtouch keyword. Dredge is a great way to fill up the graveyard, and these are my go-to dredgers. We increased out tutors even further with cards like Entomb and Fauna Shaman. Seriously, the Hawk is a pretty bad ramp card in general that might make the cut in some non-Green decks, by why in the world would a Green deck with land ramp run it? 6 Targeted Removal. Indestructible plus a second ability makes these great creatures for Kathril’s trigger, and they’ll even be able to attack sometimes when they’re on the battlefield. Okay! This section is a solid foundation but could be better. I'm pretty sure that of the new commanders in the precon, Tayam, Luminous Enigma is the strongest of the bunch, but more in a generic "oops I Combo'd" sort of way like a newer, better Ghave, Guru of Spores, running many variations of combos we've already seen before. This gives me a reference point to compare to the deck and see which areas may need improvement. We then use our nigh-unstoppable commander to one-shot our opponents with commander damage. We've got some sweet thematic options that both self-mill and recur like Nyx Weaver and Tayam, Luminous Enigma, and even some recursion that works from the graveyard like Unburial Rites. Skull Prophet ($0.25) and Sylvan Caryatid ($6.99). As I make these upgrades, I try to keep the creature/noncreature/land balance close to the balance in the original decklist. To make sure I have a cohesive theme, I stick with the Commander that you see on the front of the box for the deck and use that to guide my choices. Entomb on a stick! 0 Flexible Tutors. I didn't find anything in the precon that can end the game with little setup. As a small subtheme, we’ll also be looking to reanimate some of those creatures. 1 Harmonize The sorceries included provide some excellent utility for the deck. Bonder’s Ornament keeps getting cut from these decklists because it’s inefficient. I recommend building the Kathril deck as Voltron Keyword Soup Deathball: the plan is to quickly and consistently fill our graveyard with all the keywords that Kathril cares about, then cast our commander, which immediately turns into a 14/14 with flying, first strike, double strike, deathtouch, hexproof, indestructible, lifelink, menace, reach, trample, and vigilance. None of the precons come with any nonland tutors, which makes sense since this is an introductory product and new players who are unfamiliar with the deck wouldn't know what cards they should be searching for with tutors. To put our keyword soup creatures quickly into our graveyard, we're running a combination of self-mill (Perpetual Timepiece) and tutoring (Jarad's Orders). My priority is creatures that add strong abilities like indestructible as well as creatures that help fill the graveyard for Kathril. These keyword soup creatures in our graveyard are then used as fuel for various payoff cards (Soulflayer). The deck, as it comes in the package, has a small +1/+1 counter theme, and while some of those cards survive my update, the overall focus of my plan is on Kathril itself. Kathril, Aspect Warper is the face of Symbiotic Swarm and is the best representative of what the deck wants to do: fill your graveyard up with creatures that are loaded with useful keywords, then use your graveyard to pump up your army.
