This is not by any means my first book: in fact literature, and especially the writing of history — which as a young man I studied here at Rome under the best contemporary masters — was, until the change came, my sole profession and interest for more than thirty-five years. This one-page guide includes a plot summary and brief analysis of I Claudius by Robert Graves. But it's also a more ponderous journey, and the exploration of the Empire as a whole does pale in comparison to the lively soap op I, Claudius was one of my most riveting reads of the year.
