Co Khai Chi drew this painting by Tao Thuc (192 – 232). There were theories that he wrote it with his sister-in-law in mind after being reminded of her tragic death. Through many dynasties, this painting is still considered a national treasure. 'The Nymph of the Luo River' (223) is a beautiful poem in Burton Watson's translation (see Chinese Rhyme-Prose, recently republished by Calligrams). Cao is journeying back from the newly rebuilt and restored capital, Luoyang. The Nymph of River Luo was made famous by the 3rd-century poem Ode to the Nymph of River Luo which was written by Cao Zhi (192-232 CE), a son of Cao Cao (one of the most powerful warlords of the time).
