As in all of the other dispensations, and especially the one preceding it when Jesus personally came to restore it, the little seed of truth had to fight a mountain of falsehood. On the account given above, ‘not-p’ is true iff ‘p’ is false iff ‘p’ does not correspond to any fact; hence, ‘not-p’, if true, is not made true by any fact: it does not seem to have a truthmaker.
As Bertrand Russel noted “… minds do not create truth or falsehood.
In 1910 he writes that “we feel that there could be no falsehood if there were no minds to make mistakes” (Slater 1992, p. 119), and in the 1918 he remarks that a person with “a vivid instinct as to what is real” cannot “suppose that there is a whole set of false propositions about ” [Russell 1956, p. 223). They do not meet their own requirement of intellectual respectability. Russell finds himself driven to admit negative facts, regarded by many as paradigmatically disreputable portions of reality. This is a creation solely of their minds, not the physical world.
