Objectives: The aim of this study was to elucidate breakfast skipping genetic variants through a proxy-phenotype genome-wide association study (GWAS) for breakfast cereal skipping, a commonly assessed correlated trait. The study could not show a cause-and-effect relationship between skipping breakfast and any of these measures. Skipping breakfast or eating late in the day could raise the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity according to a new study. Both studies were performed in adults, and thus, it is unknown as to whether other groups which display a high frequency of breakfast skipping, such as adolescents (17, 18), would have similar findings. However, our study had several strengths, including comprehensive repeated assessment of many lifestyle characteristics gathered prospectively with a long duration of follow-up. But despite evidence that suggests skipping breakfast leads to increased risk of obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and other health complications, fewer people report they are making the meal a part of their daily routine. Despite widespread availability of morning meal programs, a large number of Canadian students are still skipping breakfast, according to a study from the University of Waterloo.
Additionally, neither study tightly controlled the type, quality, and quantity of the breakfast meals (15, 16). The present study had data only on regular eating habits, so we could not estimate the risk of CHD associated with occasional eating habits such as skipping breakfast a couple of days a week.
