This building was originally built by the U.S. military and was used as a laundry building until the New Industries Building was built as part of a redevelopment program on Alcatraz in 1939 when it was a federal penitentiary. The chances for reform were few, however, because Alcatraz had not been built to grant individual self-improvement opportunity, but to provide institutional stability. Many Alcatraz convicts distinguished themselves during the Second World War, making cargo nets, doing the laundry, and performing other important war work. An Unbelievable Escape. In fact, the name Alcatraz comes from a Spanish word for gannets or pelicans: alcatraces. The resulting quake ranked a 7.8 magnitude on the Richter scale, it was a quake so massive that it was recorded as far away as Cape Town, South Africa more than 10,000 miles away. Life in Alcatraz wasn’t pretty. They would have to first tidy up their cells, had 20 minutes for breakfast, and then were marched out to get to work.
